Gurgaon not in smart city list: AAP plans campaign

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expressed disappointment that Gurgaon has not been included in the list of 98 smart cities announced by the Centre. The party plans to launch a citizen awareness campaign on the issue.

Gurgaon has suffered for diversion of funds, lack of elected representatives who could have ensured an all-round development, and poor administration because of multiplicity of authorities, said the party spokesperson.

AAP Haryana in-charge and UttamNagar MLA Naresh Balyan said, “It is surprising that Gurgaon, which was once considered the first choice for inclusion in the smart city list, has not even found a place in the 98-strong list. It shows the weak administration and poor planning by the Haryana government.”.

The AAP strongly rejects the Haryana government’s explanation that it does not need Central funds for Gurgaon. The AAP will start a campaign to make citizens aware of the reasons for the denial of smart city to Gurgaon and explain the loss to the city and the residents through its members and social media.

Union Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that discussions were on to include Gurgaon in the list of smart cities.

On August 28 Union Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh had said that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for including Gurgaon as the third city from Haryana in the list of smart cities.
