The father and maternal uncle of Shehzadi, the girlfriend of slain Ankit Saxena, have shown no remorse or contrition after allegedly killing the 23-year-old photographer, said a Delhi Police officer on Monday.

Ankit and Shehzadi were in a relationship for the past three years, which was opposed by the woman’s family as they belonged to different religions.

“Shehzadi’s mother Shenaz tried to mislead the investigating officer by claiming that she was not at the crime spot, while the father, Akbar Ali, and the maternal uncle, Mohammad Saleem, showed no remorse during questioning. Later, Ms. Shenaz accepted her involvement. The father and uncle admitted to killing Ankit and said they were ready to face trial,” said Vijay Kumar, DCP (West).

He added that the case is still under investigation and a chargesheet will be filed at the earliest.

The FIR registered at Khyala police station under IPC Sections 302 and 323 on a complaint by Ankit’s father Yashpal Saxena stated that when Mr. Saxena went to save his son, he saw Ms. Shenaz ordering her husband to kill Ankit as she did not want anyone to tarnish the honour of their family.

Mr. Ali, Mr. Saleem, Ms. Shenaz and a minor, the woman’s brother, have been named in the FIR, said the police.

Eight-inch knife

“Shehzadi’s father used an eight-inch knife to kill Ankit. Her mother was thrashing Ankit’s mother while Shehzadi’s maternal uncle and brother were thrashing Ankit. Mr. Ali stabbed Ankit in his neck while Shehzadi’s brother and uncle held his arms,” added Mr. Kumar.

No CCTV footage of the murder has been recovered. “We have enough evidence, including Ankit’s parents and friends who are eyewitnesses in the case. Shehzadi’s statement is not required as she was not present at the crime scene,” added Mr. Kumar.

The investigating officer said initial probe suggests that the couple wanted to elope after Shehzadi had a fight with her parents on Friday over marrying a person from the community. She allegedly left home declaring that she won’t come back.

She called up Ankit and asked him to meet her at Tagore Garden metro station. Ankit then went to his home where he picked up his motorcycle and some cash.

“We are going through call data records of the couple to get information on the sequence of events that led to Ankit’s murder,” said a police officer.
