The Senior Superintendent of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar on Friday dissolved the Crime Branch’s Special Operations Group (SOG) and sent 16 personnel to police lines after internal messages about alleged bribes from several businessmen and traders went public in the morning.

One policeman in the SOG had allegedly posted a picture of the “list of collections” on Twitter and sent it to Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police O.P. Singh. An officer said the policeman did it after a heated argument over distribution of money.

The tweet with photos showing the bribe amounts allegedly taken by officers from businessmen and traders soon went viral. Following this, Mr. Singh ordered an investigation.

“An inquiry headed by SP City Noida has been launched,” said a senior officer.

“We first checked the credentials of the account from which the pictures were posted. The tweet has been removed. We have formed teams to investigate the case,” said Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Ajay Pal Sharma.

He said a thorough investigation will determined whether anyone was at fault.

“We did not want to keep any angle uncovered, so all 16 policemen were sent to police lines,” said Mr. Sharma.
