Choked by construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the Capital is set to get some respite from its alarming levels of pollution with the operationalisation of four C&D debris recycling plants by the end of this year.
With this, city’s construction wastes recycling capacity will be increased from a meagre 500 tonnes per day (TPD) to nearly 1,500 TPD.
The Public Works Department (PWD) is going to set up three C&D debris recycling plants in Delhi, each of which will have a minimum installed capacity of 150 TPD. Plots of two acres each have been identified at Tikri Kalan, Libaspur and near Nizamuddin Bridge for the plants, to be set up by a private company under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The department had plans to set up a fourth such plant at Kapashera, but it could not materialize owing to land issues.
The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) too is rolling out a 500-TPD C&D waste plant at Shastri Park. The plant was supposed to be ready by June, but the opening has now been pushed to mid-July, informed EDMC spokesperson Y.S. Mann. The plant is being built by concessionaire IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure & Services Ltd (IEISL).
A C&D recycling plant uses construction wastes to produce good quality kerb stones, paving blocks, interlocking tiles and ready mix concrete, which is used again for infrastructural projects.
“Technical bids for these plants have already been held and a company finalised. Now we will go for financial bids and the work will be assigned to the company by end of this week. Thereafter, the company will be given six months for installing the plant. So by December, all the three plants shall be functional,” said PWD Chief Engineer Sarvagya Shrivastava.
