Five metro stations to get screen doors by next year

more-in

Platform Screen Doors on five of the busiest stations of the Delhi metro are unlikely to be ready within this year. “Crowd management”, the reason for which the project was conceived, has itself turned out to be a major hurdle towards its completion. Besides, an approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is also awaited for the same.

As a result, only Chawri Bazar station (the sixth one) on the Yellow Line will get PSDs by December. “Preparatory work like drilling of holes is in progress at the six stations of Line 2 (Jahangirpuri-Huda City Centre). But, the first station to have platform screen doors will be Chawri Bazar metro station, the physical installation for which is likely to be completed by the end of this year,” said an official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Earlier, the deadline for all the six stations together was November.

While technical and physical aspects of the project are a problem, sources said that physical installation of the screen doors can begin only once the CMRS gives a green signal to the DMRC.

Recently, DMRC Managing Director, Mangu Singh had also said that clearances have become tougher for the new phases compared to Phase I and II. On the PSD project he said, “We have kept a deadline of six months for PSD at Chawri Bazar station. These projects also need to be approved by the CMRS. We are hopeful to get an approval soon.” When asked about the challenges faced in the project, DMRC said that workers get only four “non-revenue” hours during the night to work on the platforms.

“Till now it is still fine as we work when there is no crowd. The real challenge will be once the doors are installed as we will have to integrate it with the system. Crowd management during the day time where PSD installation would be in progress is going to be a tricky issue,” said a DMRC official.

The 1.7 metre high gates, which are already in place in DMRC’s Airport Express Line, will come up at Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi Station, Chawri Bazar, Chandni Chowk and Kashmere Gate stations.

Meanwhile, all stations of the upcoming Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar (Line 7) and Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden (Line 8) corridors will also have platform screen doors.
