Five members of the Manjeet Mahal gang, including a woman, were arrested around 6 a.m. following a tip-off from west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on June 3, the police said on Monday.

With the arrest of Vikas Dalal (27), Gaurav (23), Kaptan (22), Hemant (22) and Tikmu alias Reena (23), the police said the war between the Manjeet Mahal and Kapil Sangwan gangs may get suspended briefly.

Accused overpowered

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said they had received a tip-off that Vikas would be in Uttam Nagar with his associates. When the police asked them to surrender, the four men ran in different directions and fired two rounds at the police.

“The gangsters were overpowered after brief chase. Two sophisticated 7.62 mm pistols, two country-made pistols and 33 live cartridges were also seized,” Mr. Yadav said.

The police said they had been chasing the accused ever since Mahal’s father Shri Krishan was murdered in January.

Members of the Manjeet Mahal gang became extremely active following the murder and killed at least three people over the past three months.

“They murdered Vikrant in Gurugram, Dinesh alias Mangu in Najafgarh and Naresh in Bahadurgarh,” added Mr. Yadav.

The police said they had worked out 11 case following the June 3 arrests, including seven cases of murder, three cases of attempt to murder and one case of carjacking between Delhi and Haryana. “They committed all these crimes in the past four months,” said the officer.

Explaining Reena’s role, the police said she was used to lure members of the Kapil Sangwan gang to different places so that they could be killed. “She met Vikas last year. He asked her to befriend Rinkoo, a member of a rival gang. She invited him to her birthday party in Gurugram on March 14. He was shot dead as soon as he reached Sector 23,” said Mr Yadav.

The police have registered a case under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code and also seized the stolen car they were travelling in.
