A massive fire broke out in a four-storey building in a furniture market, which then spread to nearby shanties in west Delhi’s Kirti Nagar in the small hours of Friday.
No casualties reported so far, the police said.
After a call about the blaze was received at 12.05 a.m., 30 fire tenders rushed to the spot. The fire was brought under control by 4.40 a.m., a senior official from Delhi Fire Service said.
As two railway tracks pass through the jhuggi cluster, train services were suspended for the time till the rescue operation was going on, the official added.
Police suspect that a short circuit might have triggered the fire in the building. All the wooden raw materials stored in the workshop were gutted in the fire, said a senior police officer.
The officer added that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Left homeless
Several residents of Indira Camp and Jawahar Camp were left homeless due to the incident.
In another incident, 15 vehicles were gutted after a fire broke out on the small hours of Friday on a car workshop in east Delhi’s Jhilmil.
A senior fire official said they received a call at 4.40 a.m. regarding a fire break out in a car workshop. Seven fire tenders doused the flames.
The police said they suspect that the fire broke out because of a short-circuit.
A case has been registered and investigation is under way.
