A fake pathology lab operating in Adarsh Nagar here was sealed following the arrest of its owner on Thursday, the police said. They said the accused had issued over 23,000 fake test reports, complete with forged signatures of doctors.

The police said some of the samples “tested” at the now-sealed Unicare Path Solution Private Limited had been sent from labs across the country. Investigators suspect some of the big names in the pathology industry of using the services of the sealed laboratory.

“We arrested lab owner Ajay Yadav and technician Sanjay Yadav on Thursday. Mastermind Rajneesh Kumar is on the run. All accused belong to Jaunpur district on Uttar Pradesh,” said DCP (North-West) Aslam Khan.

Bogus reports

“The accused claimed to conduct 2,500 different tests at the lab. They would discarded every sample received after clicking a picture. Then, they would assign random values in a specific test report template. They had test report templates procured from various labs. The bogus reports were then to the patients.”

The police received a PCR call on April 17. The caller told the police that Sanjay had been abducted by a man claiming to be a CBI officer.

“The caller was a lab technician. We grew suspicious when we visited the premises as the condition of the lab was unhygienic. It was run from a small room and did not have equipment for examination of any kind of samples. It did not even have basic equipment for testing blood groups,” said Ms. Khan.

A search led to the discovery of several reports with digital signatures of four doctors. When the police enquired about the whereabouts of these doctors, Ajay could not give a satisfactory reply. “We contacted the Medical Council of India and the Delhi Medical Council for information on these doctors. They were not registered with either of the councils,” said Ms. Khan.

When the police confronted Ajay, he confessed to running the lab for Rajneesh. Ajay told the police that he had worked as an assistant at various labs in U.P. for over a decade. Meanwhile, the kidnapper turned out to be a man named Anand, who had loaned some money to Sanjay. Anand let Sanjay off after he settled his dues. Sanjay too was arrested following his return and the entire racket unearthed.
