Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, face recognition cameras, multilayer security, anti-aircraft guns and light machine guns have been positioned at key points in view of intelligence inputs of terror threats, the police said on Tuesday.

A full dress rehearsal is scheduled on Wednesday. It will take the same route as that of the Parade on Republic Day.

The Parade rehearsal will start at 9.50 a.m. from Vijay Chowk and proceed to the Red Fort. There will be elaborate traffic arrangements and restrictions in place for smooth conduct of the Parade, they said.

“We have installed 30 face recognition cameras at specific locations on Rajpath. For the first time, we are using such cameras to detect any suspicious movement. The cameras will identify faces in the crowd and match them to available photographs of terrorists and criminal elements in the Delhi Police database,” said a senior officer.

Over 25,000 security personnel have been deployed for the event from Delhi Police, Central Armed Forces and other agencies.

Patrolling intensified

“We are using counter-drone technology to thwart any attack or identify any suspicious flying objects,” said another officer. The police said patrolling in public places has been intensified along with checking and frisking at metro and railway stations, and bus terminals. Buildings falling on either side of the Parade route will be sealed and snipers deployed on them.

“We are coordinating with Central forces and other intelligence agencies regarding security arrangements. We have also alerted all district DCPs to be vigilant and increase patrolling on roads. A meeting was held with market associations and hotel owners. They have been instructed to remain vigilant and check ID proofs before renting out rooms,” added the officer.

Joint CP (Traffic) Alok Kumar said traffic movement will be restricted on certain roads that lead to the route of the Parade.

“Commuters are advised to avoid movement in New Delhi area on Wednesday to avoid any hassle. They can follow social media accounts of the Delhi Traffic Police for updates and other notifications regarding traffic restrictions,” said Mr. Kumar.
