‘Expel accused MLA from BJP and U.P. Assembly’

Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that rape-accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar be expelled from the BJP as well as be stripped off his membership of the U.P. Assembly.

In the letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP working president J.P. Nadda as well, Ms. Maliwal wrote that Mr. Sengar was arrested on April 13 last year for allegedly raping a minor girl at his residence in U.P.’s Unnao, who was now battling for her life.

‘Police inaction’

The DCW Chairperson accused the U.P. police of inaction, saying that an FIR was filed against Mr. Sengar almost a year after the incident and that he was arrested after the intervention of Allahabad High Court.

“The most shocking aspect of the entire case is that despite mounting evidence against the accused MLA , he continued to be in power and therefore enjoys unadulterated clout over the police, jail, hospital authorities and the entire U.P. administration. It is this patronage of the BJP that has enabled him to unabashedly ravage the lives of the rape victim and her family,” Ms. Maliwal wrote.

She added that the “dignity of a woman is far more important than a rogue, criminal MLA”.
