Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has announced that it would be exiting the field of medical education, much to the dismay of students, stating that this was not “its core function.” In its latest memorandum, the Corporation has noted that a decision in this regard was taken at its 163rd meeting held on December 4 last year.
ESIC deputy medical commissioner Dr. Vivek Handa said the Corporation will hand over medical colleges and other medical education institutions having separate infrastructure to State government. As per the order, the ESIC may neither undertake further admissions in the medical colleges and other medical education nor start new medical colleges.
“Post Graduate nursing, paramedical and dental including dental college, Rohini, will now not be undertaking any new admissions. Also all on-going medical education programs may continue till the admitted students pass out or [they] are adjusted as per provisions of the Essentiality Certificate issued by the State Government whichever is earlier,” noted the letter issued by ESIC.
However, students of medical colleges run by the Corporation are unhappy with the decision.
