EDMC to cough up Rs. 50,000

While earlier it was DDA which earned National Green Tribunal’s wrath for allowing burning of waste, this time around it was the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) which got pulled up.

The Tribunal slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on EDMC for indiscriminate dumping and burning of municipal solid waste even as the same stands banned by the orders of the Tribunal after it was found that burning of waste, dry leaves, etc, is one a major cause of air pollution. The environmental compensation so imposed will be deposited with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

The Tribunal also asked the Commissioner of EDMC to fix responsibility on erring officials and take action.

Not just EDMC, the PWD and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board also came in for criticism and were issued notices for failing to keep a check on the practice of open burning of waste.

The Tribunal was hearing a petition filed by east Delhi’s resident Mansi Chahal who said the New Seemapuri road no. 70 is full of garbage, polythene and solid waste and plastic is being burnt. She said the EDMC is regularly dumping waste on the road unmindful of the protest by residents. EDMC’s counsel Balendu Shekhar told the Tribunal that the corporation has written 12 letters to PWD to control the menace of garbage dumping but to date they have not taken any action.
