People from all walks of life and all ages stepped out of their houses in the Millennium City on Sunday morning to observe the first International Yoga Day.
At an official function at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Sector 38, people started to trickle in much before the scheduled two-hour programme slated to begin at 6 a.m.
Ganeshi Lal (78), one of the first few to reach the venue, said that it was a proud moment for all Indians as yoga, which had originated in India, was now being taken to the world over with the initiative of the Modi government.
He was accompanied by his son’s family, and friends. “I have brought along two of my friends as well to make the event a success,” said Mr. Lal, a retired government employee.
Besides, Haryana PWD Minister Rao Narbir Singh, Sohna MLA Tejpal Tanwar and Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash along with officials and school and college students took part. The asanas and kriyas were performed under the guidance of Yog Acharya Ramesh Thakur from Patanjali Yog Samiti.
Mr. Singh said India was a land of saints and yogis who had taught the world the words and deeds of wisdom and yoga was one of them. Several residents’ welfare associations too came forward. At Mehendi Park Sushant Lok-I, the residents learned tricks of yoga from eminent teachers M. Munshi, M.C. Gupta and N. Chopra. A K Nagpal, president, Sushant Lok RWA, said that yoga helped in prevention of diseases and created peace and harmony.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Virk led the activities at the Police Lines.
