The 56-year-old man, arrested on Monday for allegedly killing the wife of a retired Indian Air Force Wing Commander in Dwarka, was released from jail last year, the police said on Tuesday.

A senior officer said Dinesh Dixit, a property dealer from Jaipur, was arrested in a cheating and forgery case in 2016 and was released in 2018.

He is married and also has a live-in-partner in Jaipur, the police said. Dinesh has four children with his wife and a teenaged daughter with the live-in-partner, they said. His son is involved in betting and used to help him.

Dinesh met the victim, Meenu Jain, a resident of Air Force and Naval Officers Enclave and wife of commercial pilot Vinod Jain, in December 2018 on the Internet after they started talking.

“They met about 8 to 9 times. The husband or other family members were not aware of Dinesh,” the officer said.

The accused knew that Meenu was in possession of cash and jewellery. “The first time they met, she had given him about ₹50,000. He often took money from her,” the officer said.

This time, when Dinesh had come to visit her, he had planned the robbery and was confident that he would not be caught as no one in the family was aware of him.

“He had come with a full-proof plan. He had left his mobile phones at his house in Jaipur. He replaced his vehicle’s number plate with a fake one. To avoid getting captured in the CCTV camera at the society’s gate, he got tinted glasses in his car and had lowered the window slightly,” the officer said.

However, he telling the security guard that he was going to Meenu’s flat became the first lead for the police. When the CCTV footage was checked, there was a dent near the back bumper of the car. The vehicle, which had entered the apartment on April 25 was seen exiting at 8.45 p.m. the same night. He again entered at 9.15 p.m. before finally exiting at 5.21 a.m. on April 26.

Meenu was found dead at 8 a.m., the police said, adding that Dinesh had escaped with cash and jewellery worth ₹50 lakh and two mobile phones of the victim.

Google helps in probe

During investigation, they found that Meenu’s google map timeline was activated, which helped investigators to track the journey of the accused. “The CCTV footage till about 100 km was checked. The car was seen crossing the toll gates towards Jaipur. The victim’s call detail records were analysed, which showed it is a number from Jaipur. The vehicle data and the number details were then connected,” the officer.

The police then conducted raids in Jaipur where the number was traced to and the vehicle with the same dent was found parked near an apartment. The accused came near the vehicle on Monday evening from where he was nabbed, the police added.

During interrogation, he allegedly told the police that he came to Delhi on Thursday afternoon and the two had lunch together and at night, they shared a few drinks.

When Meenu became unconscious, he took items and killed her before leaving. The police said they have recovered the jewellery, the car used in commission of crime and the fake number plate.

The 52-year-old victim was found dead at her residence in Dwarka Sector 7 on Friday morning.
