Idols of Hindu goddess Durga were immersed on the final day of the Durga Puja festival.
The Yamuna river bank wore a messy look in New Delhi.
Pandals were erected in many places with colourful decoration where devotees worship earthen idol of goddess Durga.
A petition was filed in the National Green Tribuna after Ganesh Chaturthi since the biological oxygen demand (BOD) of the river reached dangerously high levels during Ganesh Chaturthi. It was submitted that the Yamuna is already dying a slow death and the continuous and unabated immersion of idols is causing complete choking of the river, and is a violation of rules.
The harmful colours could be seen seeping into the soil and water of the ecologically-sensitive area.
Discarded festive materials haven’t been removed on the banks of the river.
Immersion of idols has left its mark sieving through the entire river stretch.
