The driver of a non-resident Indian has been arrested for allegedly stealing his credit card and using it to make purchases from a jewellery shop at Vijay Vihar in Outer Delhi. The police claim to have seized the ornaments from him.

The police received a complaint from jeweller Ashok Kumar alleging that on October 23, a young man purchased from him a gold necklace set, a gold ring and a chain worth Rs.1.22 lakh and made the payment through credit card. He did not produce his identity proof. Shortly after he left the shop, the jeweller received a call from one Keshav Bhagat, stating that the credit card used for making the purchases belonged to him and that it had been stolen.

Ashok tried to nab the suspect, but he drove off on a motorcycle. The jeweller gave the motorcycle's registration number to the police. Based on his complaint, a case was registered and investigations initiated.

The police zeroed in on Jaspreet Singh Bhatia (25), a resident of Kakrola Mod, and arrested him in Uttam Nagar following a series of raids. At his instance, the motorcycle used in the commission of crime was also impounded. During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he worked as a driver of Keshav Bhagat, an NRI living in Moscow, Russia.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi) B.S. Jaiswal said Mr. Bhagat was recently in the Capital and during his stay, Jaspreet had demanded some money from him. When Mr. Bhagat refused, the driver allegedly planned to teach him a lesson. The accused stole his employer's credit card from his purse and a few days after he left for Russia, the driver allegedly used the card to purchase jewellery from Ashok's shop.
