Domestic help convicted of killing employer

A Delhi court has held a domestic help guilty of killing his employer by hitting him with an iron road while committing robbery at his house at Shreshtha Vihar in east Delhi in 2009.

Convict Surjeet Munda had also hit the victim’s wife with the same rod when she tried to save her husband. However, she survived the attack, and deposition by her as an eyewitness and two of her daughters proved crucial in the conviction of the accused.

Duo absconding

There were two more attackers with the domestic help at the time of incident, but they could not be arrested. Counsel for the accused argued that Munda has been implicated in the case and the police could not prove his employability at the house of the victim. He also argued that the victim’s wife and their two daughters were interested witnesses.

But Additional Judge Surinder Kumar Sharma dismissed the arguments. The judge said, “Sudha Soli [victim’s wife] has deposed that accused accused [Munda] had gagged her husband and his accomplices were carrying iron rods with them. The accused took a rod from one of his accomplices, and hit her husband and shoved his head against the wall.”

“Therefore, it is proved that the accused [Munda] committed robbery in pursuance of criminal conspiracy hatched by him with Shyam Kumar and Kumar Thapa [both not arrested]. It is also proved that while committing the robbery, the accused used deadly weapon, that is, iron rod with which he caused injuries to Ms. Soli. It is also proved that the accused along with others in furtherance of their common intention committed murder of Yash Pal Soli. Hence, the accused is held guilty,” the judge said.
