A 21-year-old youth from Shahdara has been identified as the suspect who posted a video on Facebook of him brutally assaulting a street dog. He has been booked for the crime, but is yet to be nabbed.

Animal rights activists, who had used social media to ‘name and shame’ the suspect, alleged that he was notorious in the area for treating animals cruelly.

“I have learnt that the man has killed a lot of animals in his colony. I spoke to senior police officers and an FIR has been registered at the Shahdara police station,” Union Cabinet Minister and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi told The Hindu .

The campaign has also received support from Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. Replying to a complaint mail from activist Shehzad Poonawalla, Mr. Jung said that he would “make sure he (the accused) would remember the incident all his life”.

Vital clues into the identity of the suspect were received through some Facebook users, Mr. Poonawalla told The Hindu . The Hindu is holding back certain names and the address to allow a fair probe in the case.
