A 21-year-old woman, who was allegedly depressed over the prolonged absence of her husband, hanged herself at her parents’ residence in Sangam Vihar on Wednesday evening.

Identified as Shanno, the victim’s husband had been awarded a life sentence in a murder case just a year after the couple’s marriage four years ago following which she had gone into depression. “She and her parents had tried to get her divorced from her husband so that she could remarry, but her in-laws did not allow any initiation. She is also understood to have been disturbed over being ignored by her in-laws and not being told to come and stay with them,” said a senior police officer.

Parents away

According to the police, Shanno’s mother was away from home for some work while her father was at his shop on Wednesday evening when she hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room. When her mother returned home, she found the door open and Shanno hanging. Her cries drew the attention of the neighbours who informed the police control room.

“The questioning of her family revealed that Shanno was married to Ajeem in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. Three months into the marriage, she got to know that Ajeem was wanted by the local police for a murder following which he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment,” the officer said.
