Demand for equal rights for Bahá'ís in Iran

Updated - March 15, 2015 07:27 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Over 40 prominent citizens across India have signed an open letter asking the Iranian Government to accord equal citizenship rights to the Bahá'í community, which is the largest religious minority there.

The signatories, who belong to various fields like judiciary, governance, academics, art and civil society, have raised concerns over the persecution of the Bahá'í community in Iran.

The letter states: “We, the concerned citizens of India, are alarmed to learn about the continuing, systematic persecution and violation of the human rights of the members of the Baha’i faith in Iran.”

“We were shocked to note that in the last 18 months, the persecution of the Bahá'ís has escalated in a more targeted and systematic fashion.”

Among those who have signed the letter are former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar, actor and activist Rahul Bose, former Governor of Assam and Tamil Nadu Bhishma Narain Singh, former Central Bureau of Investigation director D.R. Kaarthikeyan and former Attorney General Soli J. Sorabjee.
