Delhi seeks data from Centre to fight pollution

Environment Minister Kailash Gahlot on Tuesday wrote to Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan requesting him to share the data of a Central government-run air quality monitoring agency to develop better policies and action-plan in Delhi.

Requesting to share data from System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Mr. Gahlot said that stubble burning in neighbouring States contribute significantly to higher PM2.5 (a chief pollutant) level in Delhi.

Mr. Gahlot said that he came across news reports that SAFAR has stated that farm fires contributed “just” 2% of Delhi’s overall PM2.5 concentration.

“It would be grateful if we could get access to the data on the sources of pollution for the last one week and access to this data every day. This will help us take correct decisions immediately,” Mr. Gahlot said in a letter to Mr. Vardhan
