Travelling in the Delhi Metro is going to be dearer from Wednesday, with increase in the fares between ₹ 10 and ₹ 50.

According to sources in the Union Urban Development Ministry, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) board has accepted the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee and the fares are going to be effective from May 10.

The new fare slab is likely to be ₹10, ₹ 15, ₹ 20, ₹ 30, ₹ 40 and ₹ 50.

The last time the fares were hiked was in 2009, when the minimum fare was increased from ₹ 6 to ₹ 8 and maximum from ₹ 22 to ₹ 30. The DMRC has been demanding a fare hike for a long time, citing increasing operational costs that it was unable to match from fare collection and other sources of revenue. The major expenditure on running the metro services is on electricity costs, which have been rising since 2009.

The Fare Fixation Committee was set up but its recommendations were not immediately implemented. According to sources, both the Centre and the Delhi government were not in favour of a fare hike keeping the municipal polls in mind. With the elections now over, the fare hike seems to have got the final nod.
