Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday allocated responsibilities to the three working presidents of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. Haroon Yusuf and Devender Yadav were given the responsibility of overseeing the preparation for the upcoming Delhi University and other elections that the student-wing of the Congress and the National Student Union of India would contest that are usually held in early September.

Responsibilities

Rajesh Lilothia, who fought the Lok Sabha election from the North West Delhi constituency, has been made in-charge of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation, and Youth Congress Cells of the Delhi Congress.

The three working presidents were appointed on January 18 by Ms. Dikshit after taking over as Delhi Congress president. The three presidents had at that time.

Chacko’s letter

The move comes after AICC in-charge of Delhi P.C. Chacko wrote to Ms. Dikshit on July 16 telling her that the working presidents has been appointed to look after organisational affairs in the areas allotted to them but no working arrangement was in place. He said that it was “disturbing that no working arrangement was in place”. He added that Assembly elections were only a few months away and the working of the PCC had to be streamlined as early as possible.

A division within the Delhi Congress came to light last week when the three working presidents had written to Ms. Dikshit saying that several decisions that she had taken like setting up a fact finding committee to look into the results of the Lok Sabha election, dissolution of all 280 Block Congress Committees and appointment of district and block observes has been taken without consultation with them. In the letter to Ms. Dikshit, the three working chiefs had written “As be the directions of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the PCC was designed to work under your leadership along with the three working presidents and it was intended to take collective decisions in consultation with each other for strengthening the party.”

Mr. Chacko had also written to Ms. Dikshit asking her not to take any decisions regarding organisation of the party without consulting the working presidents and informing the general secretary in-charge.
