Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken on Friday alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal-led government in Delhi, which had promised to provide a corruption-free administration, was now “neck-deep in corruption”.
Quoting two surveys — one by Transparency International India (India Corruption Survey 2018 report) and the other by the Centre for Media Studies (India Corruption Study 2018) — Mr. Maken said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had failed on “transparency, accountability and anti-corruption”.
Mr. Maken said that the study by the CMS disclosed that during the last three studies during AAP rule in Delhi, the general perception of corruption in public services increased year upon year.
Bribe giving
In 2015, 20% of people felt that corruption in public service had increased; in 2016, 25% of participants said graft had increased; the percentage rose to 34% in 2018, said Mr. Maken.
The Congress leader said that the study by Transparency International India revealed that in 2018, 46% of Delhiites admitted to giving a bribe to get their work done. “A survey on “How many times did you pay a bribe to local authorities in the past one year”, Delhi ranks nine, ahead of West Bengal, Telangana and Karnataka, as 46% of citizens admitted to paying a bribe in Delhi,” Mr. Maken said.
The Delhi Congress chief said that the AAP had made a poll promise to bring in the Jan Lokpal but has now forgotten about the vow “as they know that they will be in trouble once a strong Jan Lokpal is enacted”.
