The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced the names of candidates for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and other office-bearers in the three municipal corporations of the Capital.
Mere formality
Narendra Chawla (South Delhi), Adesh Kumar Gupta (North Delhi) and Bipin Bihari Singh (East Delhi) have been announced as candidates for the mayoral polls next week, which are being viewed as mere formality in view of dominance of BJP councillors in each of the three civic bodies. The list of names was released by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari.
Five single-year terms
The erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was trifurcated into North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations in 2012. The civic bodies see a mayoral five-year tenure in five single-year terms on rotation basis. The first year is reserved for women, the second is an open category, the third for reserved category and the remaining two also are also open category. Last year, polls were held in the women’s category.
The incumbent Mayors are Preety Agarwal (North body), Kamaljeet Sehrawat (SDMC) and Neema Bhagat (EDMC). Polls in the SDMC will be held on April 26, while in the NDMC and the EDMC these will be held on April 27.
Leader of the House
For the SDMC, Satya Pal Malik will be the deputy mayoral candidate, while standing committee chairperson will be Shikha Rai and deputy chairperson Poonam Bhati. The outgoing Mayor, Ms. Sehrawat, will be the Leader of the House.
The deliberative wing of the North body will comprise deputy mayor Rajesh Lawadia, standing committee chairperson Veena Virmani, deputy chairperson Nisha Mann, member Manish Chaudhary and Leader of House Tilak Raj Kataria.
In the EDMC, Kiran Vaidh will be the deputy mayor, standing committee chairman will be Satya Pal Singh, deputy chairman Romesh Chandra Gupta, member Sandip Kapoor and Leader of House Nirmal Jain.
