Dean of Faculty of Law at Delhi University Ved Kumari resigned from her post on Tuesday citing “illegal/arbitrary” actions of the professor in-charge of the Campus Law Centre and “non-cooperation” of the university authorities.
In her letter, Ms. Kumari stated multiple such instances, including allowing students with attendance as low as 31% to take exams and even being given marks for attendance by way of fake tutorial classes; lack of action against the “whimsical and oppressive behaviour” of the professor in-charge at the Campus Law Centre; lack of office space for professors; non-payment of salaries to particular staff for over seven months; not facilitating the instruction of ‘clinical legal education’; failure to take action against a student based on recommendations of the disciplinary committee and for not facilitating approvals of the executive and academic committees for recommendations made by the Faculty of Law.
Ms. Kumari joined the post in September 2016, and is due to complete her tenure in three months’ time.
‘Dismal state of affairs’
In the resignation letter, written to the Vice-Chancellor, she said that since she did not expect anything to change in the remaining time, given past experience with the university authorities and the “dismal state of affairs” at the Faculty of Law, she did not see any reason to continue.
Ms. Kumari’s tenure has been controversial with protests having erupted over the institutions marking system and alleged violence on campus back in 2016. The matter was later taken up by the High Court as well.
