Wednesday was not the first time that the Prime Minister’s security had to deal with disgruntled people. According to officers associated with the security arrangements, this is almost a daily affair.

Physical confrontations may not be as frequent, but and abuses are hurled at the drop of a hat.

“As much as possible, we try to ignore them. As long as the public is kept away and the security rules are complied with, we stay thick-skinned to abuses,” says a senior officer.

Action is taken only when impatient motorists try to force their way through cordoned-off areas or enter into physical confrontation with the security personnel.

But rarely do any of these incidents translate into a FIR against the aggressors. “We don’t even bring them to the police station until they get physical,” says another officer.

Like the situation on Wednesday, the real problem crops up when the security men have to deal with disgruntled women.

“Often, when the situation begins to turn ugly, men pit their women family members against us, leaving us overly cautious,” the officer adds.
