Day 1 of DU admissions passes without a hitch

Some confusion over documents required by certain colleges

The first day of admissions at Delhi University on Friday was relatively smooth with only minor issues such as confusion over required documents at different colleges.

Help desks set up by student volunteers at DU colleges were abuzz with activity as students shuttled from one college to another trying to figure out whether they had made the cut off.

At Hindu College, the father of 17-year-old Megha was distressed. “She has worked so hard and scored so well. She got 96% but she is not going to make it here [Hindu College],” he said. They were soon off to Khalsa College to try their luck there.

However, for those who were sure of their admission, the admission process was easier. At SRCC, Riya Shukla said that the administration were very helpful and the whole process was over in just one hour.

At Hansraj College, Akshath, who was applying for economics, said that the process was very smooth and the only thing that annoyed him was the large number of parents jostling for space while filling out forms, “it was a bit of a hotchpotch”.

Applicants at Kamala Nehru College faced a different issue. They complained that they had not been informed that the admission form would also require the photographs of their parent.

The confusion led to a rush at nearby photo booths.

‘No info on website’

“There was no information about this on the website. My mother is accompanying me today, my father is out of station. I do not know how I will manage” said Anshu Priya, who was applying for psychology course.

Gargi College also presented the applicants with a unique problem. Purchase of the college prospectus, priced at ₹130, was made compulsory for admissions to the college.

Defending the move, a college official said: “The prospectus is like a preview to the college and we have made it compulsory for all applicants to buy it so that they are aware of all that the college has to offer and the rules that they are expected to follow.”

As of Friday evening, 2,011 seats out of an estimated 63,000 seats have been filled at DU colleges.

The colleges are not allowed to refuse admission to any student who clears the cut-off requirement.

The current process of admission approval will carry on till July 1 after which applicants under the first cut-off list will not be entertained.

The second cut-off list will be released on July 4.
