A 21-year-old dancer was arrested for allegedly committing a series of snatchings in south-east district’s Govindpuri, the police said on Thursday.

Rohan Gill alias Sunny, a resident of Govindpuri, was nabbed while he was trying to flee after snatching money from an autorickshaw driver, they said.

A purse and a mobile phone were recovered from his possession.

Sunny was arrested four times in past one year for the same crime, the police said.

On the small hours of Wednesday, an autorickshaw driver was waiting for passengers at Govindpuri Chowk when Sunny asked him for a cigarette.

The victim gave him a cigarette and got busy in counting the cash he had collected by ferrying passengers.

The accused then snatched his purse and ran away, the police said.

“The autorickshaw driver raised an alarm when a few policemen, patrolling on a bike, started chasing Sunny. After a brief chase, they nabbed him,” said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East).

During interrogation, the accused said he is a school dropout as he was always wanted to be a dancer. He had joined a dance academy in Kalkaji and completed a one-year professional dance training course.

‘ To make easy money’

After this, he joined a dance troupe and soon became the lead performer. He started performing in events and parties, they said.

“Meanwhile, he got addicted to alcohol and cigarettes while attending parties and events. He has three girlfriends. In order to spent money on them, he started committing petty thefts to make easy money,” said Mr. Biswal.

With this arrest, they claim to have solved 12 cases of thefts and snatchings in Govindpuri. The case is under investigation, they added.
