Deployment not for security, says officer

A day after the massive protest by Delhi police personnel outside the police headquarters at ITO, jawans of Central Reserve Police Force were deployed on the premises as a “precautionary measure” on Wednesday.

A senior officer said they did not expect such a large number of policemen to join the protest on Tuesday. No special arrangements were made to control the crowd and that led to huge traffic jam outside the police headquarters for several hours. “To avoid any such situation again, a company of CRPF has been stationed inside the PHQ as a precautionary measure. It has nothing to do with the security of the police headquarters,” said the officer.

SIT probe

The Special Investigation Team probing the Tis Hazari Courts violence on November 2 has found that a constable of 3rd battalion had fired in the air to disburse a group of lawyers who were “trying to attack the Additional DCP II of North district”. The team members said that several lawyers had come to the court to campaign for the Delhi Bar Association polls, which was scheduled for November 5 but was postponed following the violence, and those who were contesting the elections had also brought “outsiders”.

“So far no lawyer’s statement has been recorded. Three have been identified, including a woman lawyer who indulged in violence. We are taking help of constables, with 20-odd years of experience who regularly go to Tihar jail with undertrials, to identify the instigators. They have claimed that a few of the lawyers who indulged in violence are not practising at Tis Hazari,” said a police officer.

In the Saket Courts incident, where a constable was thrashed by a lawyer, there has been no further development after registration of FIR. A senior officer said the matter is under investigation.
