A notorious criminal involved in more than a dozen of cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion was arrested by the Gurugram Police Crime Branch along with his accomplice following a brief encounter at Rajendra Park here on Friday.

Identified as Amit Dagar, the Gurugram Police had announced a bounty of ₹1 lakh on his head. The Kaithal police had also announced a cash reward of ₹5,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team led by inspector Sajjan Singh put up barricades at Dhanwarpur Chowk on Dwarka Expressway on Friday morning and flagged down a car. However, the occupants of the car allegedly opened fire at the police in an attempt to escape. The police retaliated and a bullet hit Amit on the foot. Both persons were overpowered by the police and arrested. Amit, a resident of Rajiv Colony in Gurugram, has been admitted to Civil Hospital for treatment.

The police have recovered two pistols and three cartridges from Amit and his accomplice Anil alias Latth, a resident of Kakrola in Delhi. The car in which they were travelling has also been seized. The police said Amit was active as a criminal for over 15 years and topped the police’s list of most wanted criminals. He has committed at least eight murders while on parole. He would extort money and mostly targeted bookies while on the run. He also made extortion calls to several businessmen and realtors, and was also involved in several cases of vehicle thefts during this period, the police said. Amit is accused of shooting at several persons for not paying the extortion amount demanded by him.

He was recently involved in the murders of Mahesh alias Attack, Satbir, Jony, Girdawar and Sanjay. A member of Kaushal gang, Amit joined hands with the Surender Gyong gang in Kaithal a few years ago, the police said.
