A Delhi Police sub-inspector was injured in a bid to detain two bikers when they allegedly attempted to flee verification at a picket near Karol Bagh in North Delhi on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred around 4-30 p.m. when SI Ram Niwas, who is in-charge of the Sidhipura Police Post, was leading a verification drive aimed at checking two-wheeler riders commuting through the area. The accused driver and the pillion rider were later overpowered and placed under arrest.

According to the police, the two men, later identified as Zeeshan and Mohammad Shoaib, approached the picket from the New Rohtak Road on a red motorcycle and after slowing down initially tried to zoom past without halting at the picket.

“A constable who was part of the checking party had flagged the bike down and was walking over to them when the rider revved up his engine and accelerated towards him. In the meantime, SI Ram Niwas, who was standing nearby, lunged towards the bike in an attempt to overpower and detain its rider and pillion,” said a police officer.

“The bike skid and collided with an iron barricade. The barricade collapsed on his leg and pinned him to the street even as other from the police party overpowered Zeeshan and Shoaib,” the officer added.

Both were detained and later arrested under relevant sections of the IPC pertaining to obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty. Meanwhile, the SI was rushed for medical assistance and is nursing a broken leg.
