Member of Parliament Kunwar Sushant Singh’s cook has been arrested for allegedly stealing ₹22 lakh from his bungalow at Mahadev Road on the night of October 6, the police said on Tuesday. The accused allegedly tried to make it look like the work of an outsider.

Exit points intact

Mr. Singh reported the matter to the police on October 9. When the police started investigating, they suspected the involvement of an insider because all exit and entry points were intact.

“The crime scene was thoroughly inspected and shoe prints of the thief were lifted from the spot. The CCTV footage of the area was also examined which showed a man leaving the premises with a bag on his shoulder,” said DCP (New Delhi) B.K. Singh.

When the footage was shown to the MP, he identified him as his cook Raju alias Rajkumar after which he was arrested from his native village Muradabad in Uttar Pradesh. “His shoes were checked and they matched the print lifted from the house,” said Mr Singh.

Cash recovered

During questioning, he allegedly confessed to the crime. He told the police that he had been working with the MP since childhood and was aware of the cash kept in the house. “He said that on September 27, he left with the MP for Muradabad, which is also the MP’s native village. He stole the keys from the MP’s bag and returned to Delhi on October 6,” said the DCP, adding that he didn’t have the keys to the room though he managed to get inside the house. “He broke open the lock of the room and stole the cash,” he added.

Raju also allegedly hung nylon ropes to the window to misguide the police. The police claim to have recovered ₹21,92,700 of the stolen cash.
