Construction permits streamlined, registerd architects can approve

Permits for constructing residential buildings up to 500 square meters won't need any physical verification from the municipal corporations henceforth apart from approval from registered architects.

A new online portal for such transactions was launched on Tuesday, as a measure to improve “ease of doing business”, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), the nodal agency for the project said.

The SDMC has developed a dashboard that will provide the latest status of each case, allow for online payments and provides an online calculator as well. Construction permits for low-risk residential buildings up to 500 square meters can also be applied for online. Earlier, this type of “self-certification” was only allowed for plots up to 105 square meters, the SDMC said.

In the new system, “all the inputs submitted by the registered architect will be automatically checked by the software-based rule engine..made in line with the building bylaws, master plan 2021 and relevant acts” the statement reads. At present up to 1491 architects are registered. These professionals can immediately start using the system, which could be completed within a single day, the SDMC commissioner said.

Improvements in the processing of construction permits were credited with improving India’s position in the World Banks’ “Ease of Doing Business” ranking from 129 to 52. The latest intervention is a first of its kind in the country, which eliminates physical interference by the local urban body and completely integrates payment gateways and sanctioning portals, officials said.
