Construction ban: EDMC collects ₹5.82 crore in fines

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation issued 538 challans for violations related to construction and dust pollution between November 1 and 11, and collected ₹5.82 crore in fines.

Air Quality Index

The Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) had called for a ban on all construction activities in the city from November 1 to November 11.

The Air Quality Index in the city had dropped during this period, reaching hazardous levels on November 7, the occasion of Diwali.

Of the total, 232 challans were issued in Shahdara North zone and 306 in Shahdara South zone. The corporation had issued 2,561 challans between January and October this year amounting to ₹16.82 crore.

Other violations

Apart from fines for construction violations, the EDMC issued 123 challans for burning of garbage and 122 challans for violations of National Green Tribunal guidelines on pollution. A report by the corporation stated that the EDMC also carried out daily sprinkling of water on about 50 km of roads to combat pollution.
