A police constable sustained severe injuries after he was dragged several metres by a car whose occupants were allegedly drinking in Punjabi Bagh on Wednesday afternoon. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Monika Bhardwaj said the police control room received a call at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday regarding two men consuming liquor inside a car in Punjabi Bagh. A PCR van reached spot and zeroed in on the car mentioned by the caller.
Constable Sandeep walked up to the man sitting on the front passenger seat but he refused to roll down his window. Mr. Sandeep then went towards the driver’s side. The constable put his hand inside the vehicle through the window and tried to snatch the car keys from the ignition. However, the driver rolled up the window and pressed the accelerator. Since the constable’s arm was stuck in the window, he was dragged for several metres before his colleagues rushed to his rescue.
“The men in the car were consuming liquor when the constable approached them. They tried to flee in order to escape and ended up injuring a policeman severely. He was rushed to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment,” said Ms. Bhardwaj.
The car driver has been identified as call centre employee Gaurav Kumar. He was nabbed by the PCR van staff at the spot and handed over to local police. His co-passenger Bharat managed to flee at the time of the incident but was arrested from his Rajendra Place home in the evening.
“The accused have been booked under the charges of attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt to a public servant in the discharge of his duty. They have been sent to jail after medical examination. The car has been confiscated,” added Ms. Bhardwaj.
