Condition of battered baby continues to be critical

Child has infection in her chest and brain, say doctors

The condition of the two-year-old abandoned, battered baby girl continues to be very critical with doctors at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences' Trauma Centre here on Tuesday confirming that the child has infection in both her chest and brain.

“The child is very critical and her condition has not shown any signs of improvement. On Sunday we had put her back on the ventilator after a chest infection was detected and the child continues to be on the ventilator even on Tuesday,” said Trauma Centre Neurosurgery Department Associate Professor Deepak Aggarwal.

“There was also fluid collection in her brain, which was drained out and sent for analysis on Monday. The analysis report has confirmed that the child has infection in the brain. The child is being given high dose of antibiotics to counter the infection, but in case that does not work we will have to put in place a mechanism to drain the fluid collection in the brain constantly.''

Dr. Aggarwal said: “The doctors are keeping a constant check on the child to see the effect of antibiotics and to record any improvement in her condition. The child is still not responding to external stimuli and we are almost certain that even if she manages to survive she will have to battle crippling handicap all her life. Her brain injury has adversely affected her and she will be dependent for life on her care givers.”

A teenaged girl claiming to be her mother brought the child to the institute on January 18.

The baby girl's head was smashed, her arms were broken and there were human bite marks on her face. While under treatment the child suffered cardiac arrests and has not come out of her comatose state since.

“From the time we have admitted the child, her brain activity has been very poor and she has clearly been physically abused,” said Dr. Aggarwal.
