The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has condemned the killing of a Muslim man and attack on his 23-year-old son by a mob over rumours that they ate beef, saying it was “communalism in its ugliest manifestation and must not go unpunished in a secular nation.”
The NCM in its response to a petition letter by lawyer-activist Shehzad Poonawalla said that it has sought a report in the incident from Dadri District Magistrate.
“The Chairman of NCM has already spoken to DM, Dadri and asked him to send a report on the incident to the NCM at the earliest.
After receipt of the report we will be taking up the matter with both the Union Home Minister and Chief Minister Uttar Pradesh. It will also be discussed in the next weekly meeting of NCM,” the Commission said. Poonawalla had written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and NCM for immediate penal action in the incident.
He has also sought filing of FIR in the matter.
50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death on Monday night in UP’s Dadri, allegedly by residents of Bisara village, after rumours spread in the area about the family storing and consuming beef.
