A Class XI student was stabbed multiple times by his junior inside a government school in Krishna Nagar on Thursday. The accused, an 18-year-old Class X student, has been held, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said that the accused attacked the victim with a knife after the school assembly around 8 a.m. at Government Boys Senior Secondary School. A case on charges of attempt to murder has been registered.

Stabbed five times

A school staffer who did not wished to be named said the accused was supposed to be in class during prayers but stood in the queue. “After the assembly when the children started returning to their classes, he stopped the victim, whipped out a knife and started stabbing the boy,” he said. Teachers present caught hold of the accused but by then, he had already stabbed the 17-year-old at least five times in the arm and back.

The victim was rushed to Dr. Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan with grievous wounds and is undergoing treatment. He is out of danger, the police said. Meanwhile, the accused was handed over to the police.

Previous altercation

Victim’s brother said that the boys had a fight on Wednesday evening. “We do not know the reason of the fight but he told me he had an argument with this boy,” the brother said. Ms. Yadav said that the police were not informed about the Wednesday’s evening fight at the time of the incident.

Police sources said that, during investigation, it was found that both the victim and the accused are known to be aggressive and often argue with people for supremacy in school.

When questioned how the accused managed to bring a knife to school and if any security checks are in place, the school staffer said, “It is practically impossible to keep a check on what students bring in their bags”.

Raises safety concern

The school is in a residential colony and locals raised concerns over students’ safety inside the school. “Thankfully, my children do not go to this school but it is shocking how a student could stab another in front of teachers. It also brings a bad name to the school and the area,” said Kamlesh Goel, resident of the street adjacent to the school.

This is not the first incident of school violence in recent times. In July, a 17-year-old student of a government school was allegedly beaten to death by a group of boys right outside his school in north-east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar. One of his schoolmates was involved in the incident.
