Civic body to take action against discom for late taxes

North Delhi civic body Officials have been ordered to send TPDDL a notice for not paying taxes to the tune of Rs.80 crore

The North Delhi civic body will take action against the Tata-owned power discom that operates in the area for not paying electricity tax dues, officials said on Friday.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Yogender Chandolia and Standing Committee chairperson Mohan Bhardwaj ordered officials to send Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (TPDDL) a notice for not paying taxes to the tune of Rs.80 crore.

According to officials, the civic body has not received the payment since January this year.

The discom collects five per cent of the bill amount from customers as electricity tax and is supposed to pass it on to the local body.

However, disputes over the corporation’s own electricity bills have led to the discom withholding the payment.

“Our bill comes up to around Rs.6 crore a month. After checking the actual usage, we make the payment to TPDDL. However, they are not paying us the electricity tax, saying that the shortfall in our payments is being adjusted in their dues,” explained North Corporation spokesperson Y.S. Mann.

He said the discom was not legally allowed to adjust the bills, especially since a case is pending in the Supreme Court.
