Breaking all previous records, the peak power in the city reached 6,998 MW at 3.22 p.m. on Monday.
The earlier record for peak power demand was set on June 8 when the demand reached 6,934 MW. This is the fifth time in the current year that the previous year’s record of 6,526 MW was broken.
According to a BSES statement, “The fact that the city’s power demand is consistently crossing the 6,500 MW shows the robustness of the Capital’s distribution and transmission system.”
Highest in afternoon
The statement added, “The peak power demand in the BSES Rajdhani Power Limited’ area of south and west Delhi today clocked 3,031 MW and 1,555 MW in the BSES Yamuna Power Limited’ area of central and east Delhi.”
Peak power generally tends to be at the highest in the afternoon when temperatures peak and commercial usage, in offices for instance, is at its highest.
The maximum temperature as on Monday stood at 39 degrees, and the humidity was around 60%.
