A couple who had come to Delhi 10 days ago from their village in Bihar were in for a shock when their 2-month-old son was found kidnapped in the early hours of Thursday. Two couples have been arrested in connected with the case, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Vijayanta Arya said that the accused identified as Surender Mehto, his wife Sinu Pema, Surender’s accomplice Rahul and his wife Pinky alias Maya, kidnapped the boy as Surender and Sinu were childless even after four years of their marriage.

The police said that they received an information regarding the kidnapping on Thursday. The child’s mother allegedly told the police that she, her husband and their three children, including the child, were sleeping in an under construction building they were working in. “Around 3 a.m., she woke up and noticed that their son was missing. They approached the police and a kidnapping case was registered,” Ms. Arya said.

During the investigation, CCTV footage of the spot and nearby areas was obtained and scanned. The police said that in one of the CCTV footages, the accused was seen carrying the child. “With the help of local intelligence, the accused was identified as Surender after which technical surveillance was mounted on him and he was arrested from Bhalswa Dairy area,” the officer said.

During interrogation, he told the police about the involvement of his neighbour Rahul following which he was arrested. When enquired about the child, the two accused allegedly told the police that he was with their wives Sinu and Pinky in Ghaziabad. The two women were then arrested and the child was traced within 16 hours, Ms. Arya said.

The accused allegedly told the police that as Surender and Sinu did not have a child and wanted one, they decided to kidnap one with the help of Rahul and his wife. “The two accused used to work in the same area as labourers. They conducted a recce for four-five days and decided to kidnap the boy due to easy access. The under construction building is open from two sides,” Ms. Arya said.
