A 24-year-old chartered accountant was shot at by an acquaintance in north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar on August 4, the police said on Sunday. They said the accused has been arrested.

The victim works with a multinational company in Gurugram.

The accused, identified as Harish, was allegedly agitated as the woman had gotten engaged to a chartered accountant, who works in Gurugram as well.

The police control room received a call at 10.30 p.m. regarding a woman being shot at by a man at her residence.

When the police reached the spot, they were told that the injured woman had been taken to a hospital.

She is undergoing treatment at a private hospital and is out of danger now. She allegedly told her family about the accused.

Parents disowned him

“The police raided his [Harish’s] house in Shahdara. His parents told the police that they had disowned him because of his bad habits and behaviour,” said a police officer.

Threats

The 30-year-old accused, who performed with a devotional group, is currently unemployed. He had allegedly been threatening the woman for not taking his calls and had been following her for the past few days.

Old acquaintances

The 24-year-old victim stays at her grandmother’s house in Ashok Vihar. Her parents live in Shahdara. The accused and the victim knew each other as they used to live in the same locality in Shahdara. She later shifted to Ashok Vihar.

The accused knocked on the victim’s door at night on August 4. She opened the door and found Harish at the gate. As soon as she enquired about the purpose of his visit, he opened fire. She fell and Harish fled the spot.

“Footage from CCTV cameras in the locality was checked. The accused was seen wearing an orange shirt... He was later traced and arrested on Sunday. The accused has been booked under Section 307 [attempt to murder] of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. The weapon has been seized,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan.

Prima facie it appears that the accused and the victim were in a relationship for five years, after which they broke up. After the woman got engaged to someone else, he got agitated and wanted revenge, said a police officer.
