CCTV footage leads police to burglar

The accused is a proclaimed offender

A 32-year-old proclaimed offender has been arrested for his alleged involvement in several cases of burglary, the police said on Sunday. The accused had decamped with valuables from a house in Safdarjung Enclave on December 17, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said the accused has been identified as Harish alias Hariya, a resident of Humayunpur who belongs to Amroha in Uttar Pradesh.

Harish was involved in 11 criminal cases and is wanted in four, Mr. Kumar said.

December 17 incident

The police control room received a call on December 17 regarding a break-in at a house in Green Park. The police reached the spot and found that the lock on the back gate was broken.

“Enquiry revealed that the owner had gone abroad for his daughter’s wedding at the time of the incident. The caretaker discovered theft. A case was registered and investigation started,” Mr. Kumar said.

Footage from CCTV cameras at the spot was obtained and scanned. The footage showed four persons lurking around the house and two scooties parked outside. A man on a motorcycle was also seen shaking hands with one of the four men.

“Details of the bike were obtained. The man was identified as Ram Naresh, a resident of Humayunpur. He was shown the footage and identified the rider as Harish, an electrician who lived in the same area in 2012,” Mr. Kumar said.

A police team was sent to his village but he surrendered in court and was arrested later. Harish allegedly confessed to the burglary in Green Park along with his accomplices Ram Bharose, Mahinder and Suresh.

“The accused confessed to the burglary and said they went to their villages to evade arrest,” Mr. Kumar said.

He added that a manhunt has been launched to nab the other accused.
