Capital singes at 45.5 degrees

May 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The mercury rose to over 45 degrees in the city, making it the hottest day here so far. In more bad news, the heat wave is likely to continue.

The maximum at Palam was a sizzling 46.4 degrees Celsius, while the Safdarjung station recorded the same at 45.5 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28, said the weatherman. Humidity levels oscillated between 63-19 per cent.

For Tuesday, experts have forecast that the clear sky may turn partly cloudy by afternoon and a dust storm or thunderstorm in the evening. The maximum is likely to peak at 45 degrees. “I wait every evening for the promised storm to cool the city, but just continues to get hotter. I have been in Delhi since Independence, but this feels like the hottest summer because of the disappearing green cover,” said auto rickshaw driver Ranjay Singh.

Delhi Fire Service Director A.K Sharma said the stations get an average of 35 calls a day when the temperature is about 30 degrees, but the number jumps to close to 150 when the mercury crosses 45 degrees.
