The Opposition BJP demanded a full-day discussion on the withdrawal of special status to Jammu and Kashmir in addition to the “merger of PoK in India” and a shift in India’s nuclear policy on the eve of the Delhi Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session here.
The monsoon session of the Delhi Assembly will commence on Thursday and conclude on August 26. If not extended by the government, the session will see three sittings.
Government sources said that AAP legislators are likely to discuss and praise the Delhi government’s recent moves on regularisation of unauthorised colonies, proposed free travel for women in buses and metro trains and its decision to waive electricity charges of consumers using up to 200 units, among others.
The Opposition BJP, however, will seek to “expose” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s “hypocrisy” in showing support to Article 370 and simultaneously “supporting the tukde tukde gang”, said Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta.
“The Opposition wants that the Delhi Legislative Assembly unanimously pass a resolution expressing solidarity with the Government of India’s Kashmir Policy. It would also urge the Delhi government to come to full circle of nationalism by according approval to filing chargesheet against Kanhaiya Kumar and his associates in the Delhi High Court that is pending for long,” Mr. Gupta said.
The Leader of Opposition demanded that the first day of the session on Thursday be dedicated exclusively to the discussion on the government policy on Kashmir.
“BJP MLAs have written a letter on these lines to the Speaker. Though no reply has been received from the Speaker, it is hoped that he would accord approval to the request in national interest,” he said.
Notices on 51 subjects
Mr. Gupta added that the Opposition would also raise public interest issues in the House and had filed notices on 51 subjects under Rule-33 so that “the truth on burning problems facing the public could be brought in public domain”.
