The BJP and the Congress are opposed to the Delhi government’s plan to install CCTV cameras in the city as they are afraid they will not be able to use money and alcohol to influence the elections, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged on Tuesday.

In a tweet, Mr. Kejriwal said if the government’s plan to install CCTV cameras was successful, it will become difficult for the BJP and the Congress to distribute liquor and money before elections.

He added that a BJP leader had told him on Monday that the Lieutenant-Governor had been instructed not to allow installation of CCTV cameras before the Lok Sabha elections, which are expected to be held in the first half of 2019.

Law and order

Mr. Kejriwal’s allegation was reiterated by Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Raghav Chadha at a press conference.

Mr. Chadha said CCTV cameras will be used to improve law and order, and women’s safety.

Reacting to Mr. Kejriwal’s allegation that the BJP was against installation of CCTV cameras because it will be difficult for it to distribute liquor and money during the 2019 elections, Leader of the Opposition Vijender Gupta alleged the “CM has become the largest machine for manufacturing lies”.

‘Blind followers’

“The AAP leaders are also blindly following him in his trail of lies and deceit. The Delhi government failed to install CCTVs during three and half years of its rule, and is now hiding behind false...I challenge Mr. Kejriwal to reveal the name of the BJP leader who told him that the L-G has been instructed not to allow installation of CCTVs till the 2019 elections. There is no such leader except in the imagination of Mr. Kejriwal,” he added.

In a statement, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said the way in which the Chief Minister had “falsely accused BJP leaders”, without naming anyone, of creating hurdles regarding work related to installation of CCTVs “confirmed that the Kejriwal government and the party are more interested in creating a controversy than installing CCTVs”.
