The Delhi Government on Monday condemned the attack by a traffic policeman on a woman driver, caught on the camera, and described his act of hitting the woman with a brick as an instance of “barbaric face” of the Delhi Police being exposed.

Home Minister Satyendra Jain demanded immediate arrest of the traffic policeman involved in the incident, saying the way he had picked up a stone to hit the victim could have led to casualty.

Several offences

Mr. Jain said the policeman had committed several criminal offences in a single act, including the assault with a blunt object, misuse of official position, and an act of corruption.

The police must make public all the sections under which an FIR had been registered against him, he said.

“Suspension is no punishment. What is the guarantee that he will not be reinstated to service soon?” said Mr. Jain, while asking the Delhi Police to ensure proper behaviour of their personnel, particularly those on duty of direct public dealing.

Dismissed from service

Traffic Police chief Muktesh Chander later said that the policeman had been dismissed from the service.

While asking the police to book the policeman under the Prevention of Corruption Act as well, the Minister said though the police had failed to put a stop to corruption, they should at least ensure that their personnel are not unruly.
