Ban on plastic bottles, cups: Centre told to act in 3 months

Directions came when green panel was hearing plea moved by NGO

The National Green Tribunal on Monday directed the Centre and other agencies to take action based on recommendations made by an expert committee which sought ban on small water bottles, pouches and cups, within three months.

“The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Directorate General of Health Services, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and other agencies concerned shall take action within three months,” the NGT said.

The report of the expert committee had said that portable and cost-effective nature of single-serve sachets, pouches or bottles continued to make them attractive propositions for low-income consumers and youngsters.
