Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal chaired a meeting at Raj Niwas here on Friday to review the progress on improvement work related to Anand Vihar ISBT and others in order to improve air quality in the Capital.

The Raj Niwas stated that the L-G directed the Traffic Police to coordinate with the civic bodies concerned for effective ground action against violators in addition to issuing instructions aimed at the improvement of sanitation facilities, controlling dust pollution by proper water sprinkling and combating traffic congestion and unauthorised parking through increased deployment of police personnel on field.

Convened by Bhure Lal, Chairman, Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA), the meeting was attended by Environment & Forest Minister Imran Hussain; Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Engineer Member; Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic); Secretary (Environment); Commissioner (Transport); North Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner, besides representatives from the Public Works Department, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), the Indian Railways and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Raj Niwas also stated that the meeting started with a presentation on a site visit by Dr. Lal on Thursday to the vicinity of Anand Vihar and Kaushambi bus depots.

Public facilities

Mr. Baijal was also apprised about the status of the creation and use of adequate public facilities, such as urinals and toilets among others, the strengthening of policing and deployment of personnel to regulate traffic and pedestrian movement in areas along the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and the intensification of drives against violations of traffic rules. The L-G, the Raj Niwas stated, was informed about the action taken by the civic bodies on 10,196 industries in non-conforming areas since January this year, show-cause notices issued by the DPCC to 1,368 industries and closure directions to 417 industrial units in industrial areas.

“The L-G directed the East Delhi Municipal Corporation [EDMC] and the Traffic Police to keep footpaths obstruction-free for movement of pedestrians. He further instructed the EDMC, DMRC and the Northern Railway to ensure provision of sufficient toilets/urinals to maintain cleanliness in the area. He asked the EDMC to ensure mechanised cleaning of the area,” Raj Niwas said in a statement.

Mr. Baijal also directed the Traffic Police to regulate movement of buses (entry and exit points) to avoid choking of the area. He further directed the Traffic Police to coordinate with the civic bodies for effective enforcement on ground.

“The L-G and the EPCA Chairman also directed the UPSRTC and the police to ensure extensive and strict action against dust pollution, parking in service lanes and entry/exit of unauthorised Kaushambi buses. They further advised to take steps for solid waste management at Maharajpur market, provision for sanitation facilities, removal of encroachment,” the statement said. Mr. Baijal, the statement added, also directed all construction agencies to ensure barricading of constructions sites and sprinkling of water around the sites to control dust pollution.
